Laser engraving accommodates a broad spectrum of materials, each offering unique results. Among the most popular is wood, including natural hardwoods (maple, cherry), plywood, and MDF, typically producing a dark, burnt aesthetic.

Acrylic is a staple: cast acrylic engraves frosted white, while extruded yields a clearer mark. Leather, both natural and synthetic, engraves beautifully, creating rich, dark designs ideal for personalized items.

For durable or aesthetic applications, anodized aluminum is excellent; the laser removes the colored layer exposing bright silver. Many plastics (Delrin, engraving laminates like Traffolyte) are suitable, but PVC must be avoided due to toxic fumes. Glass can be frosted or etched, often requiring techniques like a wet paper towel or engraving paste for best results.

Other commonly engraved materials include various stones (marble, granite, slate) for textured marks, and paper/cardboard for intricate cutting and lighter engraving. Rubber is also frequently utilized, particularly for custom stamp creation. Understanding each material’s reaction to the laser’s energy is key.
