Preparing your design file for laser cutting involves several important steps to ensure a successful outcome. First, use vector-based software like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape, as laser cutters interpret vector paths better than raster images. Set your document size to correspond with the material dimensions you’ll be using.

Next, ensure that all shapes and paths are clearly defined. Use the appropriate color coding for cuts, engraves, and scores; typically, red for cutting, blue for engraving, and green for scoring. Ensure that all lines intended for cutting are set to a stroke width of 0.001 inches or hairline, which indicates to the laser cutter it is a cut line.

Remove any fill colors from cut lines and keep the design in a single layer for simplicity. Check for overlapping paths and unnecessary points, as they can cause issues during cutting. Finally, export your file in a format accepted by the laser cutter, usually SVG, DXF, or PDF, and always perform a test run with scrap material when possible to refine your settings before committing to your final piece.
